KFC staff have been seen preparing meals without masks or gloves by a horrified drive-thru customer who saw a server ‘scratching their nose’ before carrying on working.

The woman, who did not want to be named, claims during her visit to the store in Grimsby that not all workers were wearing masks and those who were, were not wearing them correctly.

She ordered a mini fillet burger – her first takeaway since the UK entered into lockdown amid the Covid-19 crisis – but was shocked by what she saw.

Current guidance from the government for pubs, restaurants and fast food chains says that wearing a face mask is optional and not required by law. There are no specific requirements to wear gloves either.

It adds: ‘These other measures remain the best ways of managing risk in the workplace and government would therefore not expect to see employers relying on face coverings as risk management for the purpose of their health and safety assessments.’

A customer at the Grimsby restaurant spotted workers not wearing face masks

The customer said: ‘They’re not bothered at all. They’re acting as if we’re not in the middle of a pandemic.

‘Not everybody was wearing gloves and masks and they were not abiding by social distancing.

‘Those who were wearing masks, were not even wearing them correctly – they were not covering their noses.’

As well as this, the woman claims to have seen a server pull her face covering down to scratch her nose before carrying on ‘working as normal’.

She added: ‘The people in the back who prepare the food were the same – they’re not wearing masks correctly and they’re touching their faces.

‘I did not see anyone use hand sanitiser or wash their hands while I sat there.’

The woman spoke with a manager but said he appeared ‘confused’ when she raised her health and safety concerns.

She added: ‘I spoke with the manager – he was shaking with nerves – and he couldn’t see what the problem was with them not wearing masks over their noses whilst cooking for customers.

‘They’re drawing people in with a false sense of security. I hope KFC bring up their procedures if nothing else.’

Since reopening, KFC has introduced new safety measures including capacity limits and hand sanister.

They have installed new Perspex screen throughout many of their restaurants – but do not make their workers wear face coverings when preparing meals.

KFC has said it has now spoken to staff in Grimsby about public safety after the issue was raised by a concerned customer who went to the drive-thru at KFC in Birchin Way.

A KFC Spokesperson said: ‘Our restaurants operating responsibly for our guests and team members is a top priority for us.

‘As in many workplaces, wearing a mask is optional but our team members are asked to wear gloves when handling packaging, so we’ve reminded our team in Grimsby to make sure we’re getting it right.’

MailOnline has contacted the fast-food chain for further comment.
