Drive-in concerts featuring Dizzee Rascal will perform in socially-distanced shows in summer

Live concerts will return during the coronavirus lockdown this summer in the form of new socially-distanced drive-in gigs. 

Dizzee Rascal, Kaiser Chiefs and Spandau Ballet’s Tony Hadley will all perform at a series of concerts between July and September.

The programme will visit 12 venues, including stadiums, racecourses and airports, across the UK.

Concerts are planned in cities and towns including London, Liverpool, Bristol and Edinburgh.

The event will be among the first of its kind in the UK during the coronavirus pandemic, as venues both large and small remain shuttered.

What are the rules for the new drive-in concerts? 

  • Everyone must attend the concerts in a car, not on foot 
  • There are a maximum of seven people per car and a maximum of 300 cars per venue
  • Attendees can bring their own folding chairs to sit on in a designated area outside the car
  • Gender neutral toilets will be available with two-metre social-distancing in place and regular cleaning
  • Attendees cannot bring food or alcohol unless for medical reasons, with both available inside venues
  • Ticket-holders will receive a Code of Conduct to ensure the risk of coronavirus spreading is reduced
  • Late arrivals will be refused entry 
  • Once parked up and in position, cars may not leave the venue until the show has concluded and on instruction from the stewards. In emergencies, cars can put on their hazard lights to call over a steward
  • Oversized vehicles (over 2m in height), coaches, buses (including minibuses), campers, RVs, limousines, commercial vehicles such as vans, Light Goods Vehicles, Heavy Goods Vehicles and vehicles with trailers are not allowed
  • Umbrellas are not permitted
  • All vehicle engines and lights must be switched off during the performance

Each drive-in event will comply with Government rules on social-distancing, with audience members given a designated area around their cars to stand or sit in.

Fans who buy a ‘premium’ price ticket will get a guaranteed vehicle location in the first three rows from the front of the stage and a priority exit from the site at the end of show. 

There will also be performances from Gary Numan, Beverley Knight, Brainiac, Bjorn Again, The Brand New Heavies, Cream Classical Ibiza, Embrace, Jack Savoretti, The Lightning Seeds, Nathan Dawe, Reggae Roast Vs Gentleman’s Dub Club, Russell Watson, Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason, Sigala, The Streets, The Snuts and Skindred. 

The programme will also feature West End theatre, interactive science shows, DJs and family events.

It will also visit Cheltenham Racecourse, Newmarket Racecourse, Leeds East Airport and the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham.

There will be morning, afternoon, early evening and late evening performances, depending on the artist and productions.

Singer-songwriter Jack Savoretti said: ‘I can’t wait to get back out on stage. I have always romanticised about the drive-in culture and hope to bring some of that romance to these drive-in shows.’

Live Nation promoter Peter Taylor said: ‘This outdoor concert series was created as a way to reimagine the live music experience during a time of social distancing by allowing fans to enjoy concerts in the safest way possible.

‘Each event will comply with all official Government guidelines in order to protect fans, artists, crews and staff.

‘We look forward to announcing some of the biggest names across UK music and bringing these fantastic artists to a city near you.’

Utilita’s chief marketing officer Jem Maidment said: ‘As we find new ways to navigate today’s world of social distancing, we believe the drive-in format is a thoughtful and fun way to safely bring one million Brits out of “entertainment lockdown” this summer 2020.’

Drive-in concerts have already been tried out in Denmark, Germany and the US, amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Get Comedy announced a series of drive-in comedy events for London’s Brent Cross London this summer earlier this week.

Performers include Omid Djalili, Jason Manford, Bill Bailey, Reginald D Hunter and Shappi Khorsandi.
