A woman has shared the heartbreaking moment her dad was forced to meet his grandson for the first time through a glass window in a bid to protect him against coronavirus.

In a heartwarming Twitter post, Emma, from Ireland, posted the picture and explained how baby Faolán is her nephew, and that it is her brother Míchéal who can be seen holding him against the panel of glass from inside his home.

The other side of the window, Míchéal’s proud father can be seen smiling outside as he sets eyes on his grandson – who is in social isolation – for the first time.

Alongside the image, captured by Faolán’s mother – also called Emma – auntie Emma penned: ‘Three generations of social distancing as my dad meets his grandson for the first time.’

‘My goodness please look after your Dad with all your might (even if you have to hold him hostage in his shed!) I need to see him holding his first grandchild on the other side of all this,’ wrote one, to which Emma replied: ‘I’ll make sure to post the first cuddle pics!’

A second commented: ‘Grandpa’s face of mixed love but cannot cuddle yet,’ while a third added: ‘Well, that’s the first time I cried today…

Emma went on to thank everyone for the lovely messages she and her family have received since the photograph went viral.

She wrote: ‘The good news is baby Faolán is doing great and oblivious to his new fame. Also Faolán is my nephew and it is my brother Míchéal holding him. His Mammy (whose name is also Emma) took the picture.

She added that her father is also doing well and is similarly completely oblivious to his newfound celebrity status.

Emma continued: ‘He wouldn’t let me take a pic of him but he’s smiling! My brother lives about 2 minutes away from him so he went up to say hello. He knew he couldn’t come in. He is looking forward to holding the baby soon.’

And thousands continued to take to the comments section underneath the adorable photo – admitting they felt mixed with emotions.

‘Oh my heart,’ wrote one, followed by a broken-hearted emoji, while a second penned: ‘Thank you for posting this. I’m expecting my first baby very soon and have been absolutely dreading this.’

A third added: ‘I bawled, beautiful and sad at the same time,’ while a fourth agreed: ‘This is such hell. Thank you for modeling what we need to do to stay safe, but it breaks my heart to see that granddad not being able to hold his grandchild.’

Another commented: ‘This picture is going to become emblematic of this pandemic,’ while a further penned: ‘What a powerful picture and thank you for posting. I hope your Dad gets to cuddle his grandson soon.’
