A young woman was pronounced dead at the scene and another is being treated for serious injuries after an incident at a Nottinghamshire railway track.

Emergency services responded to reports of a casualty at around 9pm on Monday night when officers were called to a level crossing near Sutton Parkway railway station.

British Transport Police confirmed a woman aged 18 had been pronounced dead at the scene, and a 17-year-old girl was taken to hospital with ‘serious injuries’.

Officers say they are still working to understand what happened.

National Rail reported that a person had been hit by a train between Nottingham and Worksop and all lines were closed.

Services have been running as normal today.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: ‘Shortly after 9pm yesterday, October 19, officers were called to a level crossing near Sutton Parkway railway station after reports of a casualty on the tracks.

‘Paramedics also attended, however sadly an 18-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A 17-year-old girl was also taken to hospital where she is currently being treated for serious injuries.

‘Officers are continuing to work to establish the full circumstances behind the incident.’

A travel update on the National Rail Enquiries website from 9.20pm October 19, read: ‘A person has been hit by a train between Nottingham and Worksop.

‘Whilst emergency services deal with the incident, all lines will remain closed.

‘Buses will replace trains in both directions between Nottingham,

Mansfield and Worksop for the remainder of the day.’
