Terrifying moment a driver loses control on a wet road sending his car veering dangerously back and forth across two lanes

  • Driver tries to overtake a car at over 105km/h in the rain on a wet NSW highway
  • Out-of-control vehicle swings wildly across traffic to knock over lane markers
  • Veers back across two lanes to end up bumping through puddles to a safe finish
  • ‘Anyone got spare toilet paper?’ one man jokes, others warn of driving danger

Shocking footage of a driver losing control on a wet road has shown how lucky they are to be alive as they landed in the median strip of a divided highway.

The terrifying dashcam video shows a white Holden Captiva trying to overtake a driver in the rain before swerving wildly from the median strip to the verge and back again on the Hunter Expressway, near Newcastle, New South Wales.

The video shows the slower driver with the dashcam travelling at 105km/h as the faster Captiva tried to overtake it.

The Holden Captiva tried to overtake the dashcam owner on the Hunter Expressway near Newcastle in the rain at more than 105km/h. This is the moment the driver loses control

The speed limit on the Hunter Expressway is 110km/h.

As the Captiva tries to overtake the slower car in the left lane, its tyres lose traction, and it veers wildly  across  the two lanes.

The driver tries to regain control of the swerving vehicle which fishtails onto the left side of the road, knocking over several lane-marker posts that line the verge of the highway.

The Captiva then swings back in front of the dashcam car across both lanes to a soaked and grassy median strip where the driver manages to slow it down to a stop after bumping through several puddles.

The dashcam information says the incident occurred just after 4pm on March 5, and it was uploaded to the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page on Wednesday where it was commented on by viewers.

‘The trail of brown, definately not mud…. Anyone got spare toilet paper?’ one man wrote.

‘A Captiva metaphor for the current time. Chaos is just under the surface, We are skating on thin ice,’ another person wrote.

Some praised the driver for avoiding a deadly smash.

‘Kudos to the Captiva driver for it, others would simply veer off the road and crash to a tree,’ said another.

‘Not every driver is taught how to correct a skid in real conditions.’

‘They think 4WD and weight = safe to drive how you please. Clowns,’ another person said.

After swerving wildly across both lanes, the driver then knocks over several verge markers before swinging back across the traffic to end up on the grassy median strip for a lucky escape
