After arriving on the scene, local police and wildlife keepers began chasing the beast, an anonymous officer told the Chinese video news outlet Pear.

The officers eventually lost trace of the boar after it jumped into the river and swam to the other side of the bank.

The animal is said to have run and disappeared in the mountains while the police continued their search efforts.

No pedestrians were hurt in the incident, the official added.

The news comes as another wild boar recently stormed into a tea shop in eastern China, watched by a worker frozen with fear.

Security footage shows the beast causing havoc in front of the screaming employee as it charged through the beverage store in the city centre of Nanjing.

The animal was later seized by police and handed to a local wildlife shelter after it quickly rushed out of the store.
