A special needs carer has been jailed for biting off a man’s finger who questioned her parenting after she brought her 18-month-old child to a pub.

Laura Hardman, 26, began rowing with Michael Foy, 59, after he commented on her ‘rowdy’ behaviour at the Cyns Tavern in Salford, Greater Manchetser.

She hurled abuse at Mr Foy and told him to ‘call social services’ before being ejected from the pub. Hardman later returned and bit his finger with ‘incredible force’.

The tip of Mr Foy’s index came off and was salvaged. But after he was rushed to hospital, doctors told the man it could not be reattached.

Hardman, from Leigh, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and assault. She was handed four years at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court this week.

Prosecutor Charlotte Crangle showed the court CCTV footage from the night of the attack, which showed Mr Foy pointing his finger at Hardman.

The victim feared Hardman was going to use a glass she was holding as a weapon.

Ms Crangle said Hardman bit off the end of Mr Foy’s left forefinger down to the first knuckle without any warning. He staggered back and was tended to by friends while the finger was salvaged and packed in ice, the court heard.

Hardman was escorted out of the pub by landlady Gillian Charnock but continued to act aggressively. She then slapped Ms Charnock across the face.

Mr Foy was taken to hospital, but doctors were unable to reattach his finger. Due to the extent of the bite, he eventually had his second knuckle amputated.

Ms Crangle added: ‘There is still the possibility of further surgery and he had to be treated for potential blood-borne infections’.

Mr Foy, a tiler, had taken several weeks off work and estimated his losses, at £8,000.

Hardman had no previous convictions. Neil Ronan, defending, said social services had no concerns about the special needs worker’s capabilities.

He told the court Hardman was suffering from anxiety after a neighbour and friend had been murdered and was remorseful over the incident.
