Spanish police shut down a popular Marbella club after hundreds of people descended on the venue, cramming together and disregarding social distancing.

Nightclub Olivia Valère sold 350 tickets for an event they say was organised with all Covid-19 social distancing rules in place.

But things rapidly got out of hand when huge crowds of lockdown-weary revellers proved to much for the 30 private security guards hired to keep the peace and the event was shut down in the early hours of Monday morning.

Up to 150 young people without tickets were able to sneak in through emergency-exit doors after ticketed partygoers opened them up from the inside, Spanish online news outlet Diario Sur report.

Police intervened shortly  before 3am and closed the club, reports suggest.

A proposal for sanctions was put forward by police to the Spanish government who will make the final decision on a potential fine, El Mundo reported.

The club’s owner Olivia Valère said: ‘After three months of confinement, youth need to go out and have fun, but there are some who are a bit wild and crazy.’

The club said some of the measures it put in place include limits on numbers and tables with hand sanitiser placed over the dance floor.

In Andalusia – home to Malaga, Granada and Seville – facemasks must be worn indoors and nightclubs can only operate at 40 per cent capacity.
