Investigating officers were able to identify the stretch of southbound motorway on the M23 between Gatwick and Crawley and used this information to track down the black Audi which was seized.

Police then arrested a 38-year-old man from Crawley on suspicion of dangerous driving.

A second 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving.

He was released on conditional bail until July 9.

Chief Inspector Michael Hodder, of the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit, said: ‘As part of this complex investigation, we have pursued a number of lines of enquiry which has led to the arrest of two suspects.

‘However, our enquiries are ongoing and we are still urging anyone with any information about the incident to report it online or call 101, quoting Operation Checkmate.’

You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or report it online.

Chief Insp Hodder added: ‘Speeding is one of the four most common causes of fatal and serious injury collisions, and we will not tolerate these offences on our roads.

‘While the vast majority of motorists stay within the speed limits, there is a small minority who put themselves and others at risk. There is no excuse for speeding at any time, and we will actively investigate any offences committed.’

You can report incidents of dangerous or antisocial driving via Operation Crackdown.

As the clip begins, the Audi is seen coming off a slip road accelerating on to the motorway.

The driver films the speedometer as the dial dramatically rises, within five seconds the Audi travels from 61mph to 116mph.

The driver then begins to weave in and out of traffic, showing no regard for lane discipline as the engine roars in the background.

The whole time the driver rests just one hand on the wheel as they tear down the motorway while filming.

Eventually the driver reaches 200mph, they zoom in on the speedometer showing the speed topping at 201mph.
