People reveal the VERY basic things they didn’t know despite being ‘reasonably intelligent’ – from not realising a pony is a small horse to thinking the ozone layer is a nightclub

  • People from across the UK have revealed the amusing things they didn’t know
  • One person took to Mumsnet and admitted they didn’t know how rice was made
  • Another revealed her husband thought the ozone layer was a nightclub

People have revealed the very amusing things they didn’t know – but really should have.

Taking to Mumsnet, one person, from the UK, initiated a thread after admitting she had to research how rice is made because she wasn’t sure if it was ‘man made or grown’ – despite reassuring forum users she had passed her A Levels.

And it wasn’t long before others across the nation took to the comments section to confess their lack of general knowledge – with responses including everything from not knowing a pony is a small horse, to thinking the ozone layer is a nightclub.

In the initial post, the person in question penned: ‘I honestly have just had to google how rice is made. I wasn’t sure if it was man made or grown. I know I knew but wasn’t 100%.

‘Honestly I have A levels and generally educated, although apparently not as much as I thought? Please tell me I’m not alone!’

In a bid to make her feel better, several people confessed how everything from animals to well-known countries had caused them much confusion.

‘I didn’t know that a pony is just a small horse until a year ago or so,’ wrote one. ‘I thought ponies were different animals, a bit like a donkey is different, but similar to the horse.’

A second commented: ‘I thought a scampi was a fish. I genuinely thought fishes called scampi swam in our seas,’ while a third added:

‘Embarrassing to admit this, but I only learned this year that thunder was the sound made by lightning. I always thought thunder and lightning were two separate weather things. I’m 29.’

Elsewhere, a fourth revealed: ‘Up until recently an acquaintance believed that the sun and moon were the same thing. (I don’t know what she thought about seeing them both at the same time).’

Another told how she only realised Kuala Lumper was a real place when her boss went there on holiday, while a further confessed to not knowing Timbuktu actually existed.

Meanwhile, others had more random confessions that they were willing to share on the forum.

‘It wasn’t until a thread on here that I realised a dandelion and a dandelion clock where the same plant in different stages,’ wrote one. ‘I had all the shame when I found out. I am normally reasonably intelligent.’

Another admitted: ‘I was puzzled that “paperview” is actually “pay per view”. Didn’t watch tv anyway, so never got the chance to be corrected.’

Elsewhere, someone else revealed it ‘blew their mind’ when they saw a field of pineapples growing – after always assuming they grew on trees.

And a further movie novice added: ‘My film knowledge isn’t great so I was well into adulthood before I realised Harrison Ford was one man and not a famous duo called Harris and Ford (presumed it was just like Ant and Dec or Simon and Garfunkel).
