A group of pensioners squealed with laughter as they were pushed around in their wheelchairs in a real-life game of ‘hungry hippos’ – to cheer them up while they are in coronavirus isolation.

Staff at Bryn Celyn Care Home in Maesteg, South Wales came up with the idea to keep spirits high while residents are isolated from their families amid the pandemic.

Around 3,260 people across the UK have tested positive for the virus, with 144 deaths reported as a result.

In the clip, four women in wheelchairs hold makeshift scoops as they are pushed by staff towards a pile of brightly-coloured plastic balls.

The grinning pensioners are then moved back and forth as they attempt to grab as many of the balls as possible and drag them back towards their starting point.

Others who live at the home cheer their friends on as the real-life adaptation of a favourite children’s game takes place in front of them.

The game continues in a similar fashion, much to the delight of those involved, who continue reaching out with their scoops to grab the balls as they scatter wildly across the floor.

In one moment, shortly after a woman in charge yelled ‘Go’, one of the pensioners involved in the game drops her scoop on the ground amid the excitement.

‘Residents really enjoyed playing a new game today Hungry Hippos,’ a spokesperson for the care home said.

‘Lots of laughter to lift morale of the team and residents.’
