A murder probe has been launched after the death of an 88-year-old woman following a violent distraction burglary.

Josephine Kaye was assaulted when she answered the door at her home in Stoke-on-Trent on February 27, Staffordshire Police said.

The force said the pensioner was threatened with a screwdriver before burglars stole thousands of pounds worth of cash.

The incident at Harington Drive, Park Hall, is now being treated as a murder inquiry after Mrs Kaye’s death on Tuesday.

Police said a 52-year-old man and a woman in her 60s, both from Stoke, have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

A 27-year-old man from Leicestershire was initially arrested on suspicion of robbery and other offences.

All three suspects remain in custody, police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Dan Ison said: ‘Our thoughts are very much with Mrs Kaye’s family.

‘What was initially a burglary has now sadly become an investigation into her death.

‘We have made three arrests, but our enquiries continue and we very much welcome any assistance the public can give us.’

Mr Ison has asked any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
