An NHS intensive care nurse has been left devastated after finding her car window smashed as she finished a gruelling 72-hour week at hospital.
Sarne Mawby, 56, who lives in Stoke-on-Trent, had worked for six consecutive nights, including an extra shift, transporting seriously ill children from the Royal Stoke University Hospital to Birmingham when she discovered the crime.
The grandmother’s vehicle had been left in a staff car park at Birmingham Children’s Hospital when she returned to it on Tuesday morning.
The driver’s side window was shattered, leaving glass scattered inside her car, and the culprit had taken some loose change and store loyalty cards from inside the vehicle.

Sarne said: ‘I worked every night from Wednesday last week. I finished work at 8am and went to my car to find the window had been smashed.
‘It was completely shattered and there was glass everywhere. The car park was only for staff and parents. I was in so much shock, I didn’t know what to do.
‘I work with ambulance drivers and they cleared what glass they could from the car. I drove back to Stoke with no window in.
‘I was a doing an extra shift because we haven’t been able to cover the rota.
‘I just couldn’t believe it, I was so upset. People are being so kind at the hospital and taking things in for the staff and then someone does this.’

Sarne has now returned to working at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, where she is looking after adults in intensive care.
Following the incident, on her day off, she had to borrow her partner’s car so she could go shopping for her elderly parents, and arrange for her window to be repaired.

She added: ‘I’m so upset. I do a job I love, I get paid for it, I’m doing extra shifts so I’m not short of money. It’s not about that.
‘Since I posted about what happened on Facebook I’ve had lots of lovely comments and offers of help but that’s not me, that’s not what I wanted. I just feel so hurt.
‘I must be naïve because I just didn’t think anyone would do this, especially when they saw my grandchildren’s car seats in the back seat.
‘My youngest grandchild is less than two weeks old and I haven’t been able to give him a cuddle yet or help my daughter because of what’s going on.
‘I’ve got elderly parents and I’m working as hard as I can to help people, then something like this happens.’
