Melissa McCarthy squares off against James Corden in the trailer for quirky HBO Max comedy Superintelligence

Melissa McCarthy is starring in a new comedy based around the theme of artificial intelligence.

In Superintelligence, McCarthy, 50, plays Carol Peters – deemed ‘literally the most average person on earth’ – who is targeted by a sentient technological intelligence that is weighing whether humanity is worth saving.

The quirky HBO Max comedy sees two-time Oscar nominee pairing up with James Corden, who voices the potentially malevolent AI, seen as a blue blob on screen, with characteristic aplomb.

Other familiar faces include love interest Bobby Cannavale, from Melissa’s 2015 farce Spy, as well as Ben Falcone, her real-life husband, who both directs and appears in Superintelligence.

In the film’s trailer, dropped Tuesday, McCarthy is hanging out with Brian Tyree Henry when she is targeted by Corden’s AI, who informs her that he can control every dollar, and every machine on the planet.

In a particularly amusing passage, Melissa recognizes the voice of the superintelligence as belonging to James Corden, upon which it informs her that ‘my analysis show that hearing James Corden’s voice would calm you.

‘You sent an email to James Corden claiming to be the president of Corden’s Wardens.’

Here, it shows her illicit pictures that she’d sent to Corden, of herself kissing and licking a glass of wine.

‘That was a tough night for me,’ Carol says in response.

Then, things get more serious when the AI informs McCarthy’s Carol: ‘I plan on spending these next three days hanging out with you. My intention is to solidify my theory about humanity.

‘If things don’t go well, I’ll destroy the planet. Just blow it up.’

And when faced with the prospect of the world ending in three days, Carol decides she wants to make things right with an ex, who’s played by Cannavale.

Later, she informs the AI/Corden entity, ‘I’m going to show you that people are worth saving.’

The film is packed with both suspenseful moments as well as the zany physical comedy McCarthy is known for, especially after memorable stints in films such as Bridesmaids or The Heat.
