A man in his 20s has died after being shot in the head on a main road in North London in broad daylight last night.

The victim was shot in Enfield shortly after 4.30pm yesterday and taken by paramedics to a hospital where he later died.

Police have arrested a man in his 20s on suspicion of attempted murder and are holding him in custody while enquiries continue.

Officers erected a cordon outside a pharmacy and bus stop on Hertford Road, and a crime scene remains in place. The victim’s next of kin have been informed.

The road was blocked in both directions following the incident, with Transport for London having to divert bus routes 121, 191, 279 and 307.

A Scotland Yard spokesman told MailOnline: ‘Police were called to Hertford Road in Enfield at 4.36pm on Thursday, March 19 to a report of a man shot.

‘Officers and London Ambulance Service attended to a man, believed to be in his 20s, suffering a head injury. He was taken to hospital where he later died.

‘His next of kin have been informed. Officers remain on scene and a crime scene is currently in place.

‘A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody. Enquiries continue.’ 

It came 16 hours after a woman in her 20s was stabbed to death in East Ham, East London, in the early hours of yesterday, shortly before 00.45am.

Officers were called to a road where they found the woman with serious stab injuries. She was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital but later died.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish her identity and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. A murder investigation has been launched.
