Man, 32, sheds nearly 12st in 10 months after weight spiralled out of control when his mother died

A man has shed nearly 12st in just 10 months and reversed his pre-diabetes diagnosis – after his weight spiralled out of control when his mother died.

Martin Bryan, 32, from Glasgow, told how his world was ‘turned upside down’ when his ‘wonderful’ mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2008.

He began gorging on junk food as a coping mechanism, sometimes eating an entire box of 12 Krispy Kremes in one sitting, and when she passed away the following year, it became his ‘only comfort’.

Martin ballooned to 27st 2lbs, and when he began having fainting episodes in 2018, his doctor told him it was down to his weight.

Warned he was pre-diabetic, Martin decided to sign up to the 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan – and he’s now dropped a life-changing 11st 7lbs and tips the scales at 16st.

‘The diet has changed my life completely,’ he said. ‘I am so much healthier, both physically and mentally.

‘I have now reversed the risk of being diagnosed with diabetes, and I’m so proud of myself.’

Martin told how he has battled with his weight for most of his life, but his mother’s diagnosis and subsequent death was the trigger for it to get out of control.

‘My weight snowballed in 2008 after learning that my wonderful mum had been diagnosed with terminal cancer,’ he recalled.

‘My world was turned upside down and I started to concentrate on the precious time I had left with her.

Martin’s diet before

Breakfast: Two crisp rolls either with sausage or bacon and cheese slices.

Lunch: A large meal from either KFC or McDonald’s, or Chinese buffet

Snacks: Two packets of crisps and two chocolate bars

Dinner: Large portions – often frozen ready meals – containing lots of carbohydrates and fats.

‘My emotional state led me to make bad choices – junk food became the staple of my diet.

‘When my mum lost her fight with cancer in 2009, I let grief and depression take over my life and food became my only comfort.

‘I followed the same bad patterns for a number of years and struggled to gain control of the situation.

‘I was stuck in a rut of trying to lose weight, failing, and then giving up – a vicious cycle.’

With a job in the city centre, Martin relied on large meal deals from McDonald’s and KFC for lunch and would raid the vending machine for afternoon snacks. Usually he’d eat at least a couple of packets of crisps and two chocolate bars every day.

It got worse when he went home, with Martin buying £20 worth of snacks and cakes from his local shop every evening to eat at night.

On occasion he would buy a box of 12 Krispy Kreme donuts and felt the need to scoff them all in one sitting because they’d be ‘stale the next day’.

In late 2018, Martin started experiencing fainting episodes. After consulting his GP, it was confirmed Martin was pre-diabetic, and his ill health was due to his weight.

‘I knew I had to make a change and take back control of my life, as there might not be another chance with my BMI at 47.3,’ he said.

‘This meant I was categorised as morbidly obese. My friend had been losing weight on The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan and it was such a shock as she had always struggled to find a diet that suited her, like me.

‘That’s when I decided to contact my local 1:1 Diet consultant, Catherine Laurie. As soon as I met Cat I knew I had made the right decision – she instantly put my mind at ease.’

Martin started on step 3 of the plan and used his determination and willpower to succeed.

‘In 10 months, I lost an incredible 11st 7lbs, which is absolutely life changing!’ he said. ‘I lost a further seven pounds as I worked up the steps programme towards maintenance.

‘I am now enjoying my life and living it to the full with the help of my consultant, friends, family and the diet.

‘I have a long, happy and healthy future ahead of me and recently became a consultant myself to help and inspire others who are looking to achieve what I have.’
