London home of Bank of England Governor Mark Carney goes up for sale for £5.5million

The stunning north London home where Mark Carney and his family lived during his tenure as governor of the Bank of England has gone on the market for £5.5million.

The semi-detached Victorian property, which boasts eight bedrooms and a separate staff studio, was home to Canadian-born Mr Carney, 55, his wife Diana, and their four daughters from 2015 until their departure this month.

The economist, who left his post in March after seven years, reportedly rented the South Hampstead home for £3,500 a week.

Now the four-storey home is on the market with real estate agents Aston Chase, who describe the property as being ‘exceptionally good value-for-money’ at £924 per sq ft, compared to the £3,000 per sq ft sought for properties in neighbouring Hampstead and St John’s Wood.

Situated on a quiet tree-lined street, the property offers generous living areas and spacious bedrooms.

History of the house

The house was originally built in circa 1886 by Hampstead builders James Tomblin and E. Michael, designed by renowned architect Richard Norman Shaw (1831-1912) in his classic Arts & Crafts and Queen Anne revival style.

The first owner of the house was Strand Theatre director and Royal Opera House sponsor Julius Felsenstein and he was followed by Max Borgzinner, his wife ida and their four children, the Borgzinner family owning the property up until the early 1960s.

The identity of the current owner has not been made public.

Complete with high ceilings and a contemporary stone fireplace, the room is currently divided into a dining overlooking the front garden and a drawing room opening out onto the patio and garden at the rear of the property.

The open plan kitchen-family room-dining are offers further space for entertaining, as well as a sun room with a glass cupola overlooking the garden.

The fully fitted designer kitchen has a central island with veined marble worktop and sink, an Aga style oven, built in appliances and silver-grey units, providing the perfect informal living space for entertaining family and friends.

The basement houses a wine cellar and further storage. Other features include large multi-storey bay windows and a tall feature chimney.

Mark Pollack, Co-Founder of Aston Chase says: ‘This outstanding family home on Compayne Gardens offers beautifully presented living spaces and an abudance of bedrooms, it is perfect for a large family and is in easy distance of some of Hampstead’s excellent local schools and amenities.

‘Whilst it benefits from easy access to the West End, City and Canary Wharf the house, priced at just £924 per square foot, represents exceptionally good value-for-money as in neighbouring Hampstead and St John’s Wood comparable properties routinely sell for anything from £1,250 per square foot (unmodernised) up to £3,000 per sqft.’

Howard Kayman, Associate Director at Aston Chase says: ‘The location of this house is great, being so close to the shops, Thameslink and three lines on the underground network.

‘The house benefits from really good ceiling heights and the ground floor entertaining and family spaces have a superb layout, with a beautiful flow of space. The principal bedroom suite provides lots of light and the duplex arrangement gives the atrium space an airy ambience.

‘The self-contained studio could be used as an office, for a housekeeper or for visiting relatives.’
