Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck sell $3.13m NYC penthouse they bought before friendship ended

Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck have cut more ties in selling a New York City loft they once dually owned for $3.135 million.

The Academy Award-winning actors were once the best of friends, but their friendship fell apart under the weigh of Casey’s 2017 split with Joaquin’s sister Summer Phoenix, 41.

The Manhattan loft, situated on Canal Street at the edge of the TriBeCa neighborhood, was initially listed via Sotheby’s International Realty for $3.495 million, eventually selling for $360,000 less.

It appears to a space carved out of three apartment lots over two floors, with three bathrooms and brick walls partitioning the wide open space.

The ceilings on the property span 11 feet high, and a kitchen area is outfitted with stainless steel.

The loft, according to Sotheby’s ‘mingles brilliant light, water views, and industrial authenticity’ with ‘with spectacular panoramic Hudson River views.’

Phoenix, 45, the reigning Best Actor Oscar-winner for his turn in Joker, told Vanity Fair last year that he hadn’t talked to Casey, 44, ‘in many years.’

Summer Phoenix cited irreconcilable differences in her July 2017 divorce filing to end her marriage to Casey following their March 2016 separation.

The former couple met in 1995 when Casey worked with Joaquin on the Gus Van Sant comedy To Die For; they began dating in 2000, got engaged in 2003 and got married in June of 2006. They share two sons, 15-year-old Indiana and 12-year-old Atticus.

Casey faced a firestorm of controversy in early 2017 over his settlements of sexual harassment suits from producer Amanda White and cinematographer Magdalena Gorka over his behavior as director of the  2010 movie I’m Still Here (which starred Joaquin).

The controversy snowballed amid his Award season run for Manchester By the Sea, for which he eventually won the Best Actor Oscar; following the rise of the #MeToo movement later in the year, Casey bowed out of the tradition of presenting the Best Actress award at the 2018 Oscars.

‘The cast was the crew and the crew was kind of the cast and it was an unprofessional environment and, you know, the buck had to stop with me being one of the producers and I have to accept responsibility for that and that was a mistake,’ he told the AP in August of 2018. ‘I contributed to that unprofessional environment and I tolerated that kind of behavior from other people and I wish that I hadn’t. And I regret a lot of that.’

He continued: ‘I really did not know what I was responsible for as the boss. I don’t even know if I thought of myself as the boss. But I behaved in a way and allowed others to behave in a way that was really unprofessional. And I’m sorry.’
