  • Hughes viciously attacked Liberty because she was with her ex-lover CJ Jones
  • Mr Jones and Hughes share a child together but had split up at time of attack
  • Hughes admitted causing actual bodily harm and having a knife in a public place
  • She has been jailed for 10 months, with judge saying sentence would’ve been longer if she wasn’t a young mother

A jealous woman has been jailed for 10 months for stabbing her ex-lover’s new girlfriend as they sat in a car park.

Imogen Hughes, 20, plunged a kitchen knife into Liberty Hanley’s leg as she sat with CJ Jones in a car park in Wrexham, north Wales.

Young mother Hughes had earlier pulled out her 19-year-old victim’s long hair extensions and natural hair in a furious attack in a nightclub.

A court heard she then went home to get a kitchen knife before finding the couple in the car park at around 4.30am and stabbing Miss Hanley in the thigh.

Hughes, of Wrexham, admitted causing actual bodily harm and having a kitchen knife in a public place. She was jailed for ten months at Mold Crown Court.

The judge said her sentence would have been ‘much longer’ if she wasn’t the mother of a young child.

Prosecutor David Mainstone said Hughes was out drinking with friends when she came face-to-face with Miss Hanley with her former boyfriend and the father of her child, CJ Jones.

Miss Hanley was with him at ATIK nightclub in Wrexham when she was spotted by Hughes.

Mr Maidstone said: ‘She was intimidating her and later attacked her by grabbing and pulling out her hair during which the club door staff intervened before escorting her away from the club.’

Later that night, Hughes then saw Miss Hanley and Mr Jones in the St Giles car park in Wrexham eating takeaway food.

She punctured one of the car tyres before she pulled Miss Hanley from the vehicle and stabbed her in the thigh.

Miss Hanley was taken to hospital where she received five stitches in the attack in October last year.

Defending, Duncan Bould, said it was completely ‘out of character’.

He accepted the offences passed the custody threshold, but urged for the sentence to be suspended for the sake of her young son – who she cares for on her own.

He described Hughes as ‘polite and quiet with a bright future’, said she had never been in trouble with the police before and had stayed out of trouble since the incident seven months ago.

He argued her contact with mental health services for ADHD and bipolar were also mitigating factors.

Judge Rowlands said the offence was ‘too serious’ for the sentence to be suspended, but said he would bear in mind the mitigating circumstances.

Judge Rhys Rowlands said: ‘You were in a foul temper. Instead of just going home, sobering up and staying there, you armed yourself with a kitchen knife and went back out.

‘The sentence would have been much longer had you not been the mother of a young child.’
