A Jaguar Land Rover worker who spat at a pedestrian and knocked a 15-year-old boy off his bike with a Fanta bottle while ‘showing off’ after passing his driving test has been handed 200 hours of unpaid work.

Ibrahim Shujah, 18, attacked four people on the roads of Birmingham and Solihull in a ‘spate of madness’, including during the coronavirus lockdown.

The silver Peugeot driver spat at a pedestrian, threw Fanta over a female jogger before tossing the bottle at a boy cyclist, and hurled an egg at a passerby between January and May before he was finally hauled to court last Wednesday.

Birmingham Magistrates’ Court heard the first incident occurred in Birmingham on January 14, when Shujah leaned out of his window and spat at a pedestrian.

Prosecutor Jonathan Purser said the drive-by attack was caught on a neighbour’s CCTV and the victim was later able to pick out Shujah in an identity parade.

The next incident took place on Four Ashes Road in Dorridge, Solihull shortly after 1.15pm on April 22. On that occasion a female jogger was struck by an orange liquid from the Peugeot which appeared to have three youths in it at the time.

The jogger then saw the car drive off towards a pub and was left ‘in shock’ when she watched a bottle of pop thrown from the car knock a 15-year-old boy off his bike. Mr Purser stated he was left feeling ‘distressed’ by the attack.

The fourth victim was targeted on Warwick Road at about 7.15pm on May 9. She was walking towards Acocks Green when the Peugeot, again with multiple people inside, drew level and an egg was tossed at her only to miss and land on the pavement.

Mr Purser said: ‘She was alarmed and distressed, she felt she was lucky it was only an egg and it could have been something much worse.

‘She thought the occupants should have been in lockdown and not driving about causing a public nuisance.’

Shujah admitted two counts of assault by beating, one of common assault and another of aid/abet/counsel and procure common assault.

Farzana Begum, defending, stated Shujah held a security guard badge and had worked for Jaguar Land Rover but was soon to start an ICT course at Solihull College.

She said: ‘He has shown a great deal of remorse. He was hanging around in the wrong crowd. His father says his behaviour has left them shocked.

Shujah, of Westcott Road, Sheldon, must carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and adhere to a four-month curfew between 7pm and 7am. He was ordered to pay £50 compensation to each victim, £135 in court costs and a £85 victim surcharge (pictured, Birmingham Magistrates)

‘He himself accepts he was showing off. It was an act of stupidity due to a degree of immaturity and lack of experience. Clearly this has been an eye-opener for him.’

Ms Begum told the court the defendant’s father had since taken the car keys from him.

The Chair of the Bench said: ‘For somebody who previously had no previous convictions, no cautions, nothing, then a spate of madness over a number of months having just passed your driving test, you commit four offences, serious offences, trying to show off.

‘There were other people in the car probably egging you on, you were foolish enough to let them playing the ‘big I am’ throwing a bottle of pop at a 15-year-old boy, at someone out jogging, spitting at somebody, you should be ashamed, totally ashamed.’
