Fire kills ten in Covid-19 ward: Hospital blaze breaks out at intensive care unit in Romania

  • Blaze killed ten people and critically injured seven others in Piatra Neamt today
  • It is believed majority of those killed were infected with Covid-19, officials said 
  • Health minister said fire ‘most likely triggered by a short circuit’ inside hospital 

At least ten people have died and seven are critically injured after a fire broke out at a hospital treating Covid-19 patients in Romania.

The blaze burned through two rooms housing 16 intensive care patients in Piatra Neamt before it was extinguished, an emergency services spokeswoman said today.  

Irina Popa, for the Emergency Situations Inspectorate, added it is believed some of the people killed ‘were infected with Covid-19’.

She said one patient is in serious condition from the fire and a staff member also received serious injuries. 

Among those injured is a doctor who suffered burns to 80 per cent of his body, Stiri du Bucovina reported. 

Other medical staff were also said to have suffered less significant burns in the blaze.

Those receiving treatment were reportedly transported to the burns unit at a hospital in nearby Iași following the fire. 

Romanian health minister Nelu Tataru said the blaze was ‘most likely triggered by a short circuit’ inside the hospital.

Piatra Neamt is around 219 miles north of Romania’s capital, Bucharest.
