The family of a 15-year-old girl who screamed for her mother as she was beaten in a violent tram robbery have released distressing footage of the incident.

The victim was on her way from north Manchester into the city centre on April 19 when she was surrounded and attacked without provocation by a group of teenage boys and girls, it is understood.

One person thought to be involved recorded the attack – which left the victim with bruised ribs and a dislocated wrist – and was said to have shared the footage on social media, Manchester Evening News reports.

The footage shows the victim being punched in the final carriage of a double-length tram before she is dragged to the floor by another girl.

As the horrific attack continues, the desperate victim can be heard pleading for help from her mother.

The victim’s older sister asked for the video to be shared to show how severe the attack was – and to call for increased security on the Metrolink network.

Two 14-year-old girls and one aged 16 have been arrested on suspicion of robbery, while another, aged 15, was arrested on suspicion of assault. All were bailed pending further inquiries.

The victim’s sister said: ‘It’s just horrendous… The lads were egging [the girls] on.’

She added: ‘There were other adults on the tram – but nobody did anything, not one person intervened.

‘You would have thought there would be a natural reaction, just to say ”get off”, just speaking out. But not one person did anything.’

The tram driver is thought to have been unaware of the incident as it took place in the rear carriage.

The victim left the tram in the Piccadilly area and a passer-by called the police and an ambulance
