A first look at a gripping new four-part drama set to air on Channel 5 promises to have viewers on the edge of their seat as Jill Halfpenny stars as a grieving mother who believes she’s found her son nine years after losing him.
Halfpenny (Three Girls, Dark Money, Liar) plays Jodie, a mother who lost her son Tom nine years ago in a drowning.

Jonas Armstrong (The Bay, Ripper Street, Line of Duty) plays Jason, Jodie’s only sibling, and the only real support she has had in her life.
Always in control, he is a practising lawyer, on the cusp of a huge promotion when his sister makes the discovery which could unravel the whole family.
Meanwhile, Silent Witness star Deborah Findlay plays Lynn, Jodie’s mother, with whom she has a fractious relationship and 16-year-old Cody Molko plays Daniel the boy Jodie becomes fixated with and believes is her son.
In the trailer, – which airs tonight of Channel 5 – Strictly champion Jill, who has starred in EastEnders, Coronation Street and Waterloo Road, is told ‘he died’ while she cries and says ‘I promised I’d keep him safe’.

‘You’re going to think I’m mad. It’s Tom, I followed him all the way to the school gates,’ she tells an off-screen character, before the man said to be Daniel’s father is introduced.
Other characters say she’s gone ‘completely mad’ while in another scene she’s seen running through the forest shouting ‘Daniel’.
Rupert Penry-Jones (Whitechapel, Silks, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man) plays Daniel’s father Mark, an architect that keeps a tight rein on his emotions and on his son’s life.

Also starring Babs Olusanmokun (Black Mirror, The Defenders, The Widow) as Ade and Jade Anouka (His Dark Materials, Cleaning Up, Small Axe) as Jodie’s friend and partner Yasmin.
The Drowning is written by Tim Dynevor (Emmerdale), Francesca Brill (Cuckoo, The Bait) and Luke Watson (Britannia, Ripper Street), directed by Carolina Giammetta (Vera) and is produced by Mary McCarthy.
