Ed Sheeran wouldn’t have made it in the 1980s because he’s not good looking enough, Kim Wilde says

Kim Wilde says multi award-winning singer Ed Sheeran, who is worth £200million, would NEVER have made it as a popstar in the 1980s… because he’s not good looking enough

  • The Kids in America singer said Sheeran is ‘not a classic Hollywood-looking guy’
  • Wilde, 59, said there was huge pressure to conform in the 1980s music industry
  • She also claimed that she saw a UFO fly over her Hertfordshire back garden

Ed Sheeran would never have made it as a popstar in the 1980s because ‘he’s not a classic Hollywood-looking guy’, according to Kim Wilde.

The Kids in America singer said 29-year-old Sheeran is ‘not quite as easy on the eye as George Michael was’, adding: ‘But so what?’

Wilde said the red-head, who has been criticised for looking like a ‘slob’, would have failed as a musician because of the pressure to conform 40 years ago.

Speaking to Platinum magazine, Wilde commented: ‘There’s more celebration of diversity now, acceptance of differences.

‘Look at Ed Sheeran; he’s not a classic Hollywood-looking guy, but no one cares. He’s not quite as easy on the eye as George Michael was, but so what?

‘And a singer like Sigrid can just jump on stage in her jeans and no make-up and just blow everyone away.’

Sheeran, whose wealth soared to £200million by £40million last year, is the UK’s richest musician under 30, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

The mother-of-two also revealed that she believes ‘impatient’ eco-friendly aliens may be visiting Earth to help us look after the planet a bit better.

Wilde, who now enjoys a second career as a gardener and lives in a 16th-century barn in Hertfordshire, explained how her 2018 album Here Come the Aliens was inspired by seeing a UFO flying over her back garden.

She said: ‘The effect of seeing something unexplained in the sky is very powerful, whether it was from this earth or not, and I had the strange feeling it wasn’t – the sense I was witness to something extraordinary.

‘And a lot of people locally saw it too, so I knew I wasn’t going mad. I’ve met lots of people who’ve seen really strange things.

‘They don’t talk about them because they’re scared everyone’s going to think they’re going soft, but I don’t care.

‘I know what I saw and it was quite extraordinary and had a huge impact on me in a really positive way.

‘It’s an uplifting, inspiring experience that has left me feeling in awe, even more than I was before, about being on this planet.’

She believes aliens may be trying to have a positive influence.

‘I think they are likely to be trying to look after us and help us look after ourselves and the planet,’ Wilde said. And I think they are running out of patience and that’s why they’re turning up a bit more often.

‘They might have to turn up the heat and actually scare us before we actually do something!’
