Bride who found out she was RELATED to her groom decided to go through with the wedding after all

Mother-of-the-bride who discovered her daughter was RELATED to the groom is now refusing to fund their wedding – but outraged critics point out that they’re only distant cousins

  • US Bride’s mother didn’t want to pay for wedding as bride and groom related
  • Said had found out the groom was daughter’s fifth cousin and said disapproved
  • Bride was fine with the lineage, because the groom was only a distant cousin
  • Some people online agreed that the wedding was fine because distant relatives
  • Others said they would never marry someone who was related to them

A mother-of-the-bride has revealed she refused to pay for her daughter’s wedding after finding out the bride and groom are related.

The mother, believed to be from the US, explained in a Reddit post that was later shared on Facebook, that the bride and groom are fifth cousins, meaning they share the same great-great-great-grandparents.

She went on to say that her daughter had decided to go through with the wedding, leading her to say she disapproved and wouldn’t pay for the expenses. The two women then got into a fight, which resulted in the daugther threatening to cut her mother out of her life.

People on the That’s it, I’m Wedding Shaming Facebook group were outraged by the mother’s actions, pointing out that the couple are only distantly related.

However, others sided with her, saying that they would marry a relative, even if there’s only a distant connection.

The mother explained she did not know what to do, and only wished her daughter would not marry ‘her friggin’ cousin.’

She explained she herself had been shocked by the discovery and had waited several days before breaking the news to her daughter, thinking she would be devastated.

However, the bride said she was fine with her and her groom’s shared lineage, and would marry him anyway.

‘I told her I don’t approve of this marriage, and that even though I initially agreed to pay for this wedding, I will not be paying for it if she decides to go through with it,’ the mother wrote.

‘We got into a huge fight, which ended with her telling me that she’s cutting me out of her life,’ she went on.

On Facebook, people had split reactions to the issue, with some agreeing the couple were fine.

‘Fifth cousin means you have a shared ancestor like 4 generations back. That’s literally nothing,’ one wrote.

‘I don’t care, it’s not closely enough related to actually be gross,’ another said.

‘Yeah this is a distant enough relation to not matter. Really unless you’re deeply entrenched in mapping your family history very few people would even call a fifth cousin a relative,’ said another.

People felt that the bride and groom were too loosely related to matter and said they could stil go ahead with the wedding. However, one person felt it was 'nasty'

‘It seems like they didn’t know before and fifth cousins sounds pretty far apart, even if they are related technically,’ one wrote.

However, one person felt that being related to any partner, regardless of how loose a connection, was ‘nasty.’

‘I can’t marry someone I’m related to. I don’t care how far back it is,’ she wrote.

While first cousins share the same grandparents, cousins to other degrees are often relatives people might never meet or know exist.

Fifth cousins are so called because they share the same great-great-great-grandparents.
