Tragedy as body of man in his 70s is found in a pond in a south London park

The body of a man has been discovered in a London park.

Officers say the body was recovered from a pond in Cannizaro Park, Wimbledon, earlier today.

Police say the man is believed to be aged in his 70s.

Officers say they believe they know the man’s identity and his next of kin has been informed.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: ‘Police were called at 9.19am today (Monday, April 12) to Cannizaro Park after a body was seen in a pond.

‘Officers attended with London Ambulance Service.

‘CPR was administered but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

‘Officers believe they know the man’s identity and have informed next of kin. 

‘Enquiries into the circumstances continue but at this stage the incident is not being treated as suspicious.’ 

The police presence was spotted by some of those using the park.

One Twitter user, named Chris, said: ‘Something seriously amiss in Cannizaro Park.’

Another replied: ‘Yep…. just taken a walk round there and whole of duck pond closed off.

‘Saw police guarding the edge by Rose Garden.’
