Big tech must play fair with publishers, says Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden

  • Oliver Dowden said on Tuesday that online advertising had led to a ‘fundamental imbalance’ between big tech and publishers and advertisers using the platforms
  • In November the Government announced a ‘pro-competition regime’ to govern the behaviour of dominant platforms

The time has come to ‘even the playing field’ between publishers and online platforms, the Culture Secretary said yesterday.

Oliver Dowden said the Government wanted to ensure big tech did not ‘exploit its dominance to crowd out competition and innovation’.

He said the rise of online advertising had led to a ‘fundamental imbalance’ between the platforms, which includes the likes of Google, and the publishers and advertisers that used these services to conduct their business.

In November the Government announced a ‘pro-competition regime’ to govern the behaviour of dominant platforms.

Speaking at the RESET 2021 advertising industry conference, Mr Dowden said: ‘I am unashamedly pro-tech, and am proud…to help oversee one of the strongest tech sectors, not only in Europe but in the world.

‘But we want to make sure big tech cannot exploit its dominance to crowd out competition and innovation, and expose people to unfair…practices – with businesses and consumers in turn paying the price.’
