Bette Midler, Issa Rae and Sarah Paulson head cast of HBO satirical monologue special Coastal Elites

Bette Midler, Issa Rae and Sarah Paulson will star in the HBO satirical monologue special Coastal Elites about COVID-19

Bette Midler, Issa Rae and Sarah Paulson are heading up the cast of an upcoming satirical HBO special called Coastal Elites.

The show will be made up of a string of confessional monologues which allows the actors are able to film their segments separately while in lockdown.

Unbelievable star Kaitlyn Dever and Schitt’s Creek actor Dan Levy also star in the project, which covers coronavirus and the political scene, according to Deadline.

‘Coastal elites’ is a popular term of disparagement for wealthy liberals and leftists who live in rich seaside cities like New York City and Los Angeles.

The special will be directed by Jay Roach, whose was behind the Austin Powers franchise as well as a number of political projects.

His films about politics include the HBO movies Recount and Game Change, as well as the theatrically released Trumbo and Bombshell.

Sarah received an Emmy nod for Game Change in which she played Nicolle Wallace, the communications director on John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Coastal Elites is written by acclaimed comic playwright Paul Rudnick, whose movie scripts include Addams Family Values and the 2004 The Stepford Wives remake.

He also did uncredited punch-up on the screenplay for The First Wives Club, the hit 1996 comedy starring Bette alongside Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton.

Paul’s theater work includes The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, which retells the Garden Of Eden story along gay lines.

In a nod to the slogan: ‘It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve,’ God creates a gay couple called Adam and Steve with a lesbian couple called Mabel and Jane.

HBO says that Coastal Elites ‘tells stories of breaking down and breaking through in the summer of 2020 that are funny, searing, poignant and now.’

Although a specific air date for Coastal Elites has yet to be announced, the premium cable outlet will make the information public in the next weeks.

Issa’s show Insecure is at HBO, and Bette has shot concert specials for the network including one of her 2008-2010 Las Vegas residency The Showgirl Must Go On.
