Is it a dog, is it a plane? Astonishing moment Maldwyn the lurcher soars over a farm gate with his tail spinning like a propeller

  • The lurcher easily clears the 1.15m metal gate from a virtual standstill
  • His tail spins out behind him like a propeller as he clears an entire farm gate

A lively lurcher showed the coronavirus lockdown couldn’t keep him down when he jumped over a 1.15m farm gate using his tail as a propeller.

Maldwyn, whose name means ‘brave friend’ in Welsh, showed incredible athleticism by clearing the full-size gate while his tail span out behind him.

The saluki, greyhound, whippet cross is owned by Helen Laura Morrey, who also has Taro and Sky and lives in South Wales.

The dogs were walking in Merthyr Mawr in Bridgend on April 4 when Maldwyn launched himself over the gate in quite some style.

Maldwyn, or ‘Moo’ as he is known, starts by looking at Sky trying to get under the gate with little success as Helen calls out for him to come over.

When he hears his name the sprightly hound ambles to the side before launching himself into the air.

The one-year-old’s tail spins out behind him like a helicopter as he tries to stabilise after gaining considerable height.

Helen shouts out ‘woo’ in amazement as he clears the gate with ease and lands on the other side.

Helen was taking the dogs for a social-distancing walk in the nearby village during the coronavirus lockdown.

She wrote on Instagram: ‘Even during times like these I’m blessed to have lovely places on my doorstep to take these three out.

‘Maldwyn has lost his mind and turned into a helicopter… Ignore Sky he’s being a twit as usual.’

She regularly posts pictures and videos of her dogs walking in other villages, including Cefn Cribwr, and also owns ferretts.

Her Instagram account describes herself as the ‘owner of the viral jumping lurcher’ and Maldywn has even got his own page too.

Helen got Maldwyn on March 14, 2019, when he was called Strom and took to Instagram again on his one year anniversary.

She wrote: ‘So Maldwyn (then Strom) came into my life a year ago.

‘Admittedly after a few weeks I did think c**p, what the hell have I done, he’s a nightmare and Taro isn’t keen!

‘A year down the line, although more controllable he’s still a big pain in the a*** but he’s Taros best friend! So here’s to you Maldwyn, Happy Moo Day.’
