Zorro gets a gender-swapped female-lead reboot TV series at NBC from Robert Rodriguez and Sofia Vergara

Robert Rodriguez is teaming up with Sofia Vergara to put a female-driven spin on the iconic Zorro character for a new NBC TV series.

Rodriguez will co-write the series alongside his sister Rebecca Rodriguez, the latter of which will direct the series, according to Deadline.

Vergara will serve as a producer through her LatinWe production company, alongside Ben Siverman and Howard T. Owens’ Propagate.

The show will center on Sola Dominguez, described as, ‘an underground artist who fights for social justice as a contemporary version of the mythical Zorro.’

Not only does she fight injustice, she must also defend herself against several criminal organizations after she exposes the truth about them.

Propagate had set up a similar female-lead version of Zorro as one of the first projects under its first-look deal at CBS Studios, which was also set up at NBC and written by Alfredo Barrios Jr.

Both the Rodriguez siblings will serve as executive producers alongside Propagate’s Silverman, Owens, Rodney Ferrell, Greg Lipstone and Jay Weisleder, LatinWe’s Vergara and Luis Balaguer, plus Geoff Clark, Eric Bromberg and John Gertz.

The project comes more than two decades after Rodriguez was attached to direct The Mask of Zorro, the 1998 film starring Antonio Banderas and featuring a breakthrough performance for Catherine Zeta-Jones.

He ultimately walked away from the project, with Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, Casino Royale) taking over at the helm.
