Warner Bros. distribution plans for the DC movie differ from many other major studios, with Disney the latest to curb a theatrical release by putting out Onward on VOD on Friday night.

The move cuts the Pixar film’s theatrical release significantly.

As well as being released for purchase Friday night, the film giant will go on to make Onward available on Disney+, April 3.

Onward was released in theaters nationwide on March 6, just before the U.S. government began encouraging social distancing and put limits on gatherings over 10 people.

The movie has already grossed just over $100 million worldwide on a budget of approximately $200 million.

Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer voice main characters in the film following two brothers in a magical world on a quest to bring their father back for just one day.

Onward is the latest film that Disney announced an early Disney+ premiere for, after dropping Frozen 2 on the streaming platform over the weekend, ahead of schedule.

Disney said they released the Frozen sequel early with the intent of ‘surprising families with some fun and joy during this challenging period.’

The studio has also delayed the release of live-action Mulan, Black Widow and New Mutants.

Universal and Warner Bros. are also releasing Emma, Trolls World: World Tour, The Hunt, The Invisible Man and Birds of Prey on-demand early.
