Battle: Kelsey’s father recently revealed that her sister eight-year-old Kennedy almost died from coronavirus after it ‘impacted her whole body’

Kelsey’s post comes after her father recently revealed that her sister, eight-year-old Kennedy, almost died from coronavirus after it ‘impacted her whole body’.

Kennedy, who has genetic condition Spinal Muscular Atrophy, was released from hospital in November after battling the virus as well as sepsis.

And speaking over a month after his daughter’s arrival home, Kelsey’s father Paul opened up about the youngster’s horrifying ordeal, admitting the family ‘didn’t know if she was going to make it.’

TV star Kelsey’s sister was admitted to Great Ormond Street hospital in November, with the family fearing the worst as Kennedy fought Covid-19 and sepsis in intensive care.

It’s said that Kennedy, who spent thee weeks in hospital, was one the first SMA type 1 patients to fall ill with the virus.

Paul told The Mirror: ‘We didn’t know if she was going to make it. She went through a torrid time, it literally impacted her whole body. It was awful to watch.

‘The doctors told us they were changing the antibiotics they were giving her, and that it needed to work because there was nothing else they could do.’

The doting father went on to add that the family are desperate for the government to make clear when high-risk children will be eligible for the coronavirus vaccines currently being rolled out, as no timetable has yet been outlined.

He added: ‘There are a large group of vulnerable children who will lose their lives if they catch the virus. We’re not asking to jump the queue, we just need to know what’s going on.’

He went on to say that there are many ‘extremely vulnerable’ children who would greatly ‘benefit’ from having the vaccine.

Despite her release from hospital, Kennedy still suffers from swollen kidneys and will have a scan next month to determine if there is any damage from the virus.

In November, Kelsey opened up about her family’s fears for Kennedy as she battled for her life in hospital.

In an interview with MailOnline, Kelsey spoke of her longing for Kennedy to make a full recovery, as living at her family home without her sibling was unbearable.

Kelsey explained that Kennedy’s condition weakens her immune system and she’s spent every winter in intensive care after catching colds and on worse occasions, pneumonia.

She said: ‘I am positive she will beat it but it’s never happened before to an SMA type 1 patient, they have never caught something like this so we all don’t know what’s going to happen.

‘Kennedy has been in intensive care every winter, her entire life. But she is really struggling with Covid. We’re heartbroken.

‘She is in the best place, she is in Great Ormond Street intensive care and my stepdad is doing a really good job helping her with her treatment and I know how strong Kennedy is.

‘Now she has sepsis, it makes it a lot more serious because she has that on top of Covid, which was terrible anyway. It’s really not good at the moment but the doctors are doing everything they can.’

Kelsey, who found fame on TOWIE in 2019, was forced to move out of her family home so she could continue working this year, while sister Kennedy shielded from the virus.

Despite the family’s careful efforts in protecting vulnerable Kennedy from the disease, she was hospitalised with Covid last week.

‘We did try so hard,’ Kelsey continued.

‘She hasn’t left the house since the first lockdown. I moved out for three months because we were shielding her, no one was coming in or out of the house.

‘For my mum and stepdad, not leaving the house for such a long time has been hard. It drives you crazy. For Kennedy as well, she must have been so bored.

‘But when lockdown was over, we started going to shops, so it she could have caught it from anyone. She has such a low immune system she catches everything.’

Kelsey was just 12-years-old when her sister was born and diagnosed with SMA, which is a disease that affects the central nervous system and skeletal muscle movement.

Kennedy had a twin brother Karter, who sadly passed away within a year of being born, when Kelsey was a child.

Kelsey explained: ‘When I was a kid I didn’t really understand what was going on and it became normal to me.

‘Kennedy would be rushed to hospital and stop breathing, as a kid I look back and I’m so upset as I was so young going through all that.

‘It has completely changed my home life because the focus is on Kennedy 24/7 whereas when I was younger, it was on me and we were always going out together as a family. It is hard.’

The TOWIE star revealed Kennedy’s hospital admission on Instagram in November,  revealing she was ‘heartbroken’ as her disabled sibling was rushed into intensive care after contracting coronavirus.

Sharing a picture of Kennedy in her hospital bed, she wrote: ‘So as you can imagine me and my family are all heartbroken because yesterday Kennedy got rushed into hospital and got tested positive for Covid-19.

‘She is really fighting but she has severe breathing problems as it is so I can only imagine how hard it is for her now. she is in intesive care (sic).’

Kelsey went on to explain in another post: ‘My little sister kennedy got rushed into hospital yesterday and tested positive for COVID19, we are all so heartbroken as kennedy has severe breathing problems from her terminal illness SMA as it is.

‘So this is very dangerous for her. Kennedy was high risk to covid & we tried our best to shield her from this terrible virus but unfortunately because of her low immune system she caught it.

‘She is in intensive care but really fighting like she always does, so i just need everyone to keep her in your prayers and hopefully she gets through this my strong little girl she doesn’t deserve any of this (sic).’

Kennedy even cameoed on an episode, as Kelsey proudly showed co-stars Chloe, Demi and Frankie Sims a video of her sibling.

She said: ‘Before I spoke about my sister on the show, everyone thought I was normal and lived a good life – that’s why you can’t judge a book by its cover.

‘I loved it and she loved it too, she’s a big fan of the show, she watches it every week. She was really happy to be on it. She thinks she’s more famous than me now though!’

What is Spinal Muscular Atrophy?

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a disease that weakens a patient’s strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord.

It results in gradual muscle wasting and the severity of symptoms varies by type.

Type 1: SMA is the most severe and is evident at birth. The weakening of muscles means sufferers cannot sit and usually leads to death by the age of five

Type 2: Is intermediate with the sufferer being unable to stand

Type 3: Is mild and makes it difficult to get up from a sitting position, while

Type 4: Sufferers don’t have symptoms until they are in their 20s or 30s
