Best known for his Gothic fantasy films such as Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Batman, the US-born filmmaker, 62, rented Eglon House from 2016, using the property as his London base, with part of the home used as his creative studio where he completed the 2019 Film Dumbo for Disney.

Designed in collaboration with architectural practice Chassay Last Architects and design house Russell Sage Studio, the home consists of two interlinked buildings which sit opposite one another across a private central garden courtyard, with the pair joined at lower ground floor level.
On the lower level, the salon leads into the leisure suite which includes the swimming pool that doubles as a cinema room, with a mechanical floor and waterproof screen, alongside a leisure room and gym with a purpose designed cocktail bar.

The site has always had a commercial use. A mid‐19th‐century census map shows a series of stables and barns where shell casings were manufactured during the First World War.
Express Dairies then used it to service their floats at a time when cattle were still grazed on nearby Primrose Hill.
Although Eglon House settles into the outline of the original structure it is an entirely new building.

Pierre Chareau’s ‘House of Glass’ completed in 1932 was a milestone in early modern architectural design.
It was a pioneer of the modern‐day live, work phenomenon with a commercial space on the ground floor and living accommodation above.
It was commissioned by a Doctor Dalsace who hosted Surrealist soirees in his salle de sejour which were attended by Jean Cocteau Joan Miro and Yves Tanguy. The close proximity of other buildings dictated a transparent façade.

While discreet, the location that is also convenient with shops around the corner, and the open spaces of Primrose Hill and Regent’s Park are a short walk away.

After six years of design and construction Eglon House was completed in 2016.
