The Walking Dead: World Beyond: Iris Bennett orders group to build own boat to cross Mississippi

Iris Bennett asserted her authority on Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead: World Beyond by ordering a boat-building mission to cross the Mississippi River. 

The episode titled Madman Across The River followed the group as smart high school student Iris [Aliyah Royale] decided they should get ‘creative’ and build their own boat since the military destroyed all the bridges during the zombie apocalypse.

They scavenged for parts at a nearby warehouse where Iris and her sister Hope [Alexa Mansour] found a crate of nail polish.

While they worked on building a boat, security officer Felix Carlucci [Nico Tortorella] worked on weak link Elton Ortiz [Nicolas Cantu] as he attempted to steer the kids away from their cross-country mission to New York.

Elton during the episode had flashbacks of the onset of the zombie apocalypse a decade earlier with his father and pregnant mother.

‘Be safe. Heard something’s going on near the hospital. There’s a lot of police activity,’ Elton’s father ominously warned his wife who was rushing off to a meeting.

The flashback also revealed that Elton already had the name Esmeralda picked out for his sister.

Hope overheard Felix and security officer Huck [Annet Mahendru] talking about their plan to flip Elton and she confronted him about it.

Silas Plaskett [Hal Cumpston] was shocked and Felix admitted that he planned on taking the boat down the river and leading them back to the University.

Iris then took over once again.

‘We don’t have time for this! There is still so much left to do! And you know what, leave your s*** at the door. Because without each and every one of us giving 100 percent, …We’re not making it across that river,’ she declared.

Huck and Hope then bonded as the security officer admitted that the cross-country adventure would make them all stronger and better.

Felix then asked to speak with Hope who scolded him for not treating her and Iris as sisters.

‘We’re your problems,’ she told him.

The boat engine they built puttered out because their fire was not hot enough, so Elton and Silas went back to the warehouse to retrieve the flammable nail polish.

Felix and Iris meanwhile went on a scavenging mission and he revealed that he was supposed to go with her father Leo, but Will took his place.

A lightning strike from an approaching storm struck a nearby Daquiritown barn and zombies started pouring out.

Iris and Felix rushed back to the boat where the nail polish worked and sparked up the engine.

It flamed out and quit and slim Elton squeezed in to fix a loose drive belt.

He had to overcome his claustrophobia from being hidden in a box by his father during the zombie apocalypse.

Elton saved the day and they made it onto the boat as the zombies were approaching.

They camped out later on dry land and Huck said she would go an advance scouting mission and return in 48 hours with information for them.

Elton wandered off so Hope went to check on him.

Elton shared the story about his father saving him despite being terrified and how he hoped his mom and Esmeralda were still alive.

Hope then looked in Elton’s notebook and recognized his mother as the pregnant woman that she killed as a girl during the chaos of the zombie apocalypse.
