Naim Mu-So

£1,300, naimaudio.com

Rating:

Wireless speakers used to be the weedy runts of the hi-fi family. Then Naim’s Mu-So came along.

Looking like a metal paving slab, it was so heavy it made you worry for your toes, and so loud it could bring my wife racing upstairs in 0.3 seconds to insist I turn it down.

The £1,000 speaker was an instant hit for British veterans Naim, creating a new category of hi-fi: wireless speakers for sonic snobs.

The Naim Mu-So got the same ‘brains’ as Naim’s £20,000 network player, each speaker now has its own amp, and a bass management system means that it can practically demolish your house at high volumes

Five years on, version two is turned up to 11 (including the price, which is now £1,300). But for anyone (like me) who’s immature enough to find powerful hi-fi weirdly thrilling, this is a beast.

There is also an HDMI input so you can use this to make your television antisocially loud as well.

Yes, it’s expensive (and if it’s too much, you can now grab the still-great original Mu-So for just £895 in John Lewis). But for this money, you’d struggle to find anything that sounds better or hits harder. And it’s still (very slightly) cheaper than a top-end iPhone.
