‘We’ve never done reshoots’: The New Mutants director Josh Boone opens up about production delays amid Disney-Fox merger

The New Mutants director Josh Boone has opened up on the delayed process of film production amid the $52 billion Disney-Fox merger, claiming reshoots were never done.

‘Everybody said we did reshoots! We’ve never done reshoots,’ the filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly Monday ahead of the movie’s long-awaited release next month, two years after it was initially planned to debut in April of 2018.

Boone told the outlet that the time that elapsed amid the merger of the corporations, the core cast – including Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga and Blu Hunt – had aged to a point where they would look notably different if they reshot any scenes.

The latest: The New Mutants director Josh Boone, 40, opens up on the delayed process of film production amid the Disney-Fox merger, claiming reshoots were never done, as the time that elapsed made it an unrealistic proposition

‘I’ll tell you this: if there hadn’t been a merger, I’m sure we would’ve done reshoots the same way every movie does pickups,’ the director said. ‘We didn’t even do that because by the time the merger was done and everything was settled, everybody’s older.’

Boone estimated that the film was about 75 percent finished through post-production at the time the merger held things up, but that ‘it was nice to be able to come back’ and wrap up the film when Disney requested he complete it.

He said the year-plus in between helped he and co-writer Knate Lee return to the project refreshed, and they streamlined things they ‘hadn’t thought about or noticed a year before.

‘We hadn’t seen it in a year,’ he said. ‘We did a bunch of things here and there.’

Williams told the outlet she was happy with the end result of the film, as it was not impacted adversely by the delays.

‘The movie is exactly the movie we set out to make,’ said the Game of Thrones alum, who plays Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane in the forthcoming movie. ‘I was nervous when they were talking about reshooting or re-editing that it was gonna be very different, but honestly, it’s exactly what we set out to do.’

Boone earlier this week took to Instagram to hearken the completion of the project with four crew members – sound editor Don Sylvester, editor Andrew Buckland, sound engineer David Giammarco and music editor Chris McGeary.

‘It was a long road but this roaring beast is done and we can’t wait for you to see it!’ he said.

The New Mutants is set for release in theaters April 3.
