‘I wish Steve was here to share the beautiful moment’: Terri Irwin says her daughter Bindi’s pregnancy announcement is bittersweet after the death of her husband

Bindi Irwin announced on Tuesday that she and her husband, Chandler Powell, were expecting her first child together.

And shortly after they shared the exciting news, the 22-year-old wildlife warrior’s mother, Terri, shared a heartfelt message on Twitter.

The Irwin matriarch, 56, posted a photo of the expectant couple holding up a tiny version of the Australia Zoo uniform, and also told her followers that the news was bittersweet following her husband Steve’s death almost 14 years ago.

She began: ‘This is the best day ever! I am over the moon to announce that @BindiIrwin and @chandlerpowell9 are going to have a baby!’ 

‘Words cannot express the love that is filling my heart. While I wish that Steve was here to share this beautiful moment, I know that he would be so proud,’ she added.

Steve, who was known to millions around the world as ‘The Crocodile Hunter’, died aged 44 on September 4, 2006, after a stingray attack at Batt Reef, Queensland.

Bindi confirmed via Instagram on Tuesday that she was pregnant with her first child to husband Chandler Powell.

The conservationist, who married 23-year-old Chandler in March, shared a photo of the pair holding up a baby-sized khaki shirt, and wrote: ‘Baby Wildlife Warrior due 2021.’

‘Chandler and I are proud to announce that we’re expecting! It’s an honour to share this special moment in our lives with you,’ she added.
