Spencer Matthews has opened up about his past relationship with alcohol, admitting he felt like he ‘drank quite a lot’.

Spencer also discussed his recent impressive body transformation, which saw him drop 20lbs in 10-week after feeling he was ‘“drifting into dad territory’.

Speaking in an interview with Men’s Health UK, Spencer opened up on his changing habits with alcohol, after making the decision to go sober after marrying wife Vogue Williams in 2018.

Discussing his past relationship with alcohol, he explained that he had always had an ‘appetite’ for going out and socialising, adding that his old job as a city broker saw him drink regularly.

He said: ‘Over the years, I felt like I drank quite a lot, it was holding me back from my full potential. It got to the stage where my glass of wine at night or with my evening meal would turn into half a bottle or a bottle and it was pretty regular.

The TV star added that on occasion he would ‘drink to excess’, but added that it was much more a ‘steady intake’ of alcohol.

Though he’s all but teetotal these days, Spencer, who launched low-alcohol drinks company Clean Co in 2019, told how he wouldn’t rule out a return to drinking in moderation in the future.

He explained: ‘No one is saying ‘go sober, alcohol is terrible’. We [CleanCo] as a company definitely don’t [say that]. We’re there as an option or replacement to full strength alcohol…I even see myself down the line living a life of moderation.

He added that he just ‘needed a break from the bad habits’ he had formed in the past, before ensuring that he’s not ‘anti-alcohol.’

Spencer recently wowed fans as he showcased his ripped frame after dropping 20lbs during a 10-week fitness transformation with Men’s Health.

After weeks of being on a strict diet and exercise regime, the star has maintained his muscle mass, cut his body fat from 12 per cent to 5 per cent, and gone from 84kg (13st 3lbs) to 75kg (11st 11lbs).

Discussing his diet prior to his body transformation, Spencer told how though his diet ‘wasn’t awful’,  he would consume ‘twice as much’ as he needed to and had a penchant for ‘good fats’ such as avocado and hummus.

He said: ‘I’d go through a tub of hummus every single day, I’d always have a bit of chocolate…I don’t think I was terribly overweight before, it’s just you get stuck into whatever [food] is there and usually it’s delicious.’

Meanwhile, Spencer admitted he was ‘astounded’ by the fact he had to do just two hours of weight lifting as part of his body transformation.

He also told how he had been ‘drifting into dad territory’ prior to lifting weights, adding he ‘wasn’t much’ of a weight lifter and preferred cardio activities such as jiu jitsu, running and cycling.

And after developing a new found love of weight lifting thanks to his personal trainer, Spencer added that he ‘can’t wait’ to get back into the gym after lockdown and throw some ‘serious weight’ around.
