Sonic The Hedgehog sequel now in development with director and screenwriters all back for next go-around

Sonic The Hedgehog raked in $306 million, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2020.

As a result of the box-office success, Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy confirmed on Thursday that a sequel of the live-action family comedy is in development.

Director Jeff Fowler and screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller are all back onboard for the second go-around, according to Variety.

Confirmed: A sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog is now in development

Fowler confirmed he would be back at the helm on Twitter.

‘ROUND TWO WITH THE BLUE!!’ he tweeted out on Thursday to the delight of many fans who replied to the announcement.

‘IM SO HAPPY! Best of luck Jeff on the production of the movie! We believe in you guys,’ one person wrote.

Another fans added: SO EXCITED!!! I HOPE TAILS AND KNUCKLES ARE IN IT PLEAAAAAASE!!’

Someone else simply wrote an enthusiastic: ‘YESSS.’

The original film, based on the video game franchise published by Sega, starred Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic The Hedgehog and Jim Carray as Doctor Robotnik.

It also featured James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally and Neal McDonough. 

The film, which debuted in US theaters on February 14, also set a new mark as the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time in North America.

It was among the first slate of films that were pulled from theaters and released early on home entertainment due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

With the development of the sequel still in the early stages, there’s no confirmation on the cast or when production will get underway.
