UK singer Sam Smith promised a special performance at Mardi Gras.

And on Saturday, the 27-year-old certainly delivered when they stormed the stage while at the after party at the Hordern Pavilion. 

Sam was positively showstopping in the dazzling performance, as they ascended in a red dress emblazoned with the word ‘equality’, which theatrically billowed across the stage.

This was Sam’s first performance at the LGBT+ inclusive event. 

Writing on Instagram on Sunday morning, Sam enthused: ‘I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. I’ve been sh**ting myself all day. I love you Sydney and I love being queer x.’ 

Later, Sam shared a photograph of themselves alongside Dua Lipa, who also performed at the Sydney event.

Inspiration: Sam’s showstopping moment appeared to be inspired by a famous moment in the musical Wicked 

Dua struck a mischievous smile at the camera, while Sam stood behind her with a smouldering expression on their face. 

Sam captioned the image with a number of multi-coloured hearts, symbolising the Pride flag.   

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph on Saturday, Sam said they wanted to make their performance at the event very special.

‘I just want to make it really special. I’ve put a lot of time money, and effort into it,’ they said. 

The British artist also admitted that the performance at the festival is different to their usual ‘slow ballads’, but they are excited as the experience ‘feels like a milestone.’ 

An advocate for queer rights, Sam said that being able to help people is ‘wonderful.’

‘Right now I am just trying to figure out my s**t and if it is helping other people, then it is absolutely wonderful,’ the four-time Grammy Award winner said.

The musician is set to release a new album in May and said that the songs have been inspired by the ‘shame I have felt my entire life.’  

This comes one day after Sam spoke candidly about their ongoing ‘weight issues’ on The Project on Friday.

‘My main issue when I was a kid wasn’t my sexuality, it was more my body,’ Sam said.

They added: ‘My body issues are so linked with my gender issues. It’s all linked with each other. I still struggle having my top off.

‘I still struggle with weight issues, I always will. I feel like with social media, taking my top off on social media, it helped me.’  

Sam, who came out as non-binary last year, also spoke about their battle with depression.
