She plays the first openly gay superhero in history – Karen Kane in CW’s new Batwoman series.

And Ruby Rose, 33, is set to share her first kiss with co-star Meagan Tandy, 34, on the show, after her character came out as a lesbian during a recent episode.

In new pictures released by the studio on Monday, Ruby is seen dressed in her full Batwoman superhero suit and mask as she passionately kisses Meagan, who plays Sophie Mooran, an ex-flame of Batwoman’s alter-ego.

Ruby’s character was revealed to be a lesbian on the show in January, through a storyline which featured a hacker who threatened to expose Batwoman’s secret.

She goes onto thwart the threat when she discovers the hacker is a high school student whose ex-girlfriend outed her to her unsupportive parents.

The experience forces her character to realise that she must embrace who she really is, and come out publicly.

Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries hinted to The Hollywood Reporter in January that coming out will add to complications for Karen as she struggles to keep her real identity a secret.

She said coming out reveled ‘a huge piece of her identity’ and it, ‘narrowed down the population quite a bit’ of who could be the superhero.

Ruby herself came out as a lesbian when she was just 12, and identifies as gender fluid.

The Melbourne-born beauty started her career as a model and became an MTV VJ before moving to LA to pursue acting.

She quickly rose to fame after joining the cast of Orange Is the New Black in 2015 playing Stella Carlin.

She has also starred in films such as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, John Wick: Chapter 2, Pitch Perfect 3 and The Meg.
