Piers Morgan left Susanna Reid looking on in horror as he gave the viral Weetabix and baked beans combination a taste test live on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday.

The journalist, 55, didn’t hesitate to sample the dish on air after social media was sent into meltdown earlier this week when Weetabix tweeted out their bizarre new recipe – to a decidedly divided response.

Never one to shy away from controversial matters, Piers happily tucked in to the pile of loaded cereal, while rationalising the recipe. 

Piers mused: ‘Think about it, it’s just wheat and baked beans. You have it on toast, why wouldn’t you have those two things?’

Sceptical Susanna responded: ‘I’ll give you a reason why at least, because Weetabix is so dry until the point they get wet and then they’re really mushy.’ 

‘Well, it would have been better if it was warm,’ quipped Piers after he gave the dish a taste test.  

‘It’s different… it’s interesting,’ he mused, before suggesting ‘this might be the new beans on toast.’  

Piers then turned to GMB’s resident medic Dr Hilary Jones for advice on whether Weetabix’s new version is healthier for him than bread. 

Dr Hilary replied: ‘I want to warn Susanna that it’s really high in fibre.’   

The bold statement goes against the tide of public opinion as a slew of British brands rushed to poke fun at the Weetabix recipe after it was first tweeted on Tuesday.   

‘That Tweet should come with a health warning,’ joked the NHS account.

To which Weetabix responded: ‘No beans were harmed in the making of this breakfast’.  

Nando’s chicken questioned if the recipe was a cry for help. ‘You okay, hun? DM’s are open if you need to talk,’ they wrote.  

Domino’s seized the opportunity to minimise their own divisive topping choices: ‘Us: Pineapple on pizza is the most controversial food ever. Weetabix: Hold my spoon,’ they commented.
