‘We thought we were in a slight rut’: Peter Helliar reveals a backpacking holiday with his wife and three sons brought his family back together
Peter Helliar has revealed that an unconventional family holiday drew him and his wife out of a ‘rut’.
The comedian shares three sons with his wife of 19 years, Bridget Helliar, and on Saturday he told Stellar how he strengthened their marriage.
In 2013, Peter took his three sons, now Oscar, 11, Aidan, 15, and Liam, 17 backpacking in Eastern Europe.

The Project host says of the unconventional decision: ‘We thought we were in a slight rut.
‘We chatted about what we could do and just decided the thought we weren’t going to travel for a long time made us sad.’
After he and his wife decided to do things different, ‘instantly life has got more exciting.’

Peter adds that it’s the best decision he’s ever made and recalls those days so fondly.
‘We have such high regard for those moments and that time. I’m never more present with my kids than when we’ve been travelling,’ he said.
Last year, Peter says he was so busy with various projects that he came close to burning out.

In 2020, Peter is very busy – he’s working on new podcast You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet, embarking on a national comedy tour.
On top of all that, the lauded comedian’s sixth children’s book – in his Frankie Fish series – is out in June.
The former Rove Live star also regularly co-hosts The Project and will continue to do so this year.
