‘Australians are down to earth’: Paul Hogan, 80, slams political correctness as he promotes his new film project The Very Excellent Mr Dundee

Actor Paul Hogan has slammed political correctness while promoting his new comedy, The Very Excellent Mr Dundee.

The 80-year-old reflected on the humour in The Paul Hogan Show, which ran from 1973 to 84, while speaking to The Herald Sun this weekend.

‘There would be some changes but not many,’ Paul said of the skit show.

The actor, who famously broke into comedy in his 30s, said the show was produced with the intention of entertaining the audience.

‘Unless you are sitting there looking to be offended, it was done without malice,’ Paul said of the program.

‘It’s not designed to hurt anybody, it’s designed to not take life too seriously and have a laugh.’

Paul went on to praise Australians and their ability to laugh at themselves: ‘The world is full of pretentious people,’ Paul said.

‘We’re not like that. Australians are sort of down to earth and that’s what I miss the most [while living in abroad].’

Paul will soon play a fictionalised version of himself in The Very Excellent Mr Dundee, which will screen on Amazon Prime.

The film follows his life in Melbourne and Los Angeles, and will premiere next month. It will feature cameos from John Cleese and Olivia Newton-John.

The movie follows Paul, who lives a quiet life out of the spotlight, reluctantly accepting his knighthood for his services to comedy.

The last time Paul starred as Mick Dundee was in the 2001 film Crocodile Dundee in Los Angeles.

He first played the legendary Australian outback expert in Crocodile Dundee 1986, which was then followed by the follow up in 1988.

Paul’s new movie comes after a Tourism Australia’s hilarious faux movie trailer aired during the US Super Bowl back in 2018.

The big budget advert, which cost $36 million, took the form of a fake movie trailer for a new Dundee film called Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home.
