Paul had been self-isolating since last week, and had tweeted he was ‘feeling a bit ropey’, though at the time hadn’t confirmed if his symptoms were related to coronavirus.

Posting a picture of the view outside his window, he wrote at the time: ‘Well I’m a week into cancelled work and isolation, apart from dodging Sue of course …

‘#2MetresApartRule, feeling a bit ropey but it’s a lovely sunny day to look at, hopefully it will all get back to normal soon.’

The star also posted a tongue-in-cheek image of himself clutching a pack of toilet rolls after they went into short supply when the virus first gripped the UK.

Paul’s brother Barry died 19 months ago from bone cancer, and despite being inseparable from Paul, managed to keep the illness a secret until six weeks before he died.

Paul has also previously spoken about how he believes his late brother contacts him through his dreams.

Speaking to The Mirror, Paul said: ‘He’s been in so many of my dreams since he passed, and I believe in the afterlife – it’s comforting he’s contacting me that way’.

He added that he reminisces on the good times with his wife Sue in order to stop himself ‘just being upset’.

‘He wanted to work up until the end and he did it. I just miss those laughs we had on stage’, he added.

Paul said he ‘can’t fathom’ that they will ‘never have that laugh together anymore’, but said his brother had a ‘completely unregrettable life’.

The BAFTA award winning pair were firm staples of British television and Paul said that they ‘had a ball’ together and that it had been a ‘brilliant ride’.

Their career had really hit it off in 1963 when the brothers played a show with Dorothy Squires who had been a huge name on the comedy circuit at the time.

After that they spent time working as Butlin’s Redcoats before working on Opportunity Knocks in 1967.

Twenty-years later the pair started ChuckleVision on BBC One, which ran for 22 years.
