They have been close friends for many decades.

On Monday, Olivia shared an Instagram snap of the pair together, taken backstage at AAMI Park.

The Australian singer cuddled up to Elton, who wore a pair of his typically flamboyant sunglasses.

He also had on a dark blue jacket emblazoned with sequins and a dangling rhinestone necklace.

Olivia meanwhile looked comfortable and casual in a khaki denim shirt and natural makeup.

She captioned the snap: ‘So wonderful to see my brilliant, long time friend @eltonjohn at his amazing Melbourne concert. Thank you matey’.

Before the concert, Elton, who is on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, addressed Olivia, who was seated in the crowd.

‘I’m a fan and I respect and love you so much and it was great to see you before the show, looking as good as you do. Bless you forever,’ he said on stage.

Sir Elton was forced to cut his New Zealand concert in Auckland short on earlier this month due to a recent diagnosis of walking pneumonia.

The official announcement comes after Elton himself penned a remorseful open letter dedicated to the 47,000 fans who attended the Auckland concert.

‘I want to thank everyone who attended tonight’s gig in Auckland. I was diagnosed with walking pneumonia earlier today, but I was determined to give you the best show humanly possible,’ he wrote on Instagram.

‘I’m disappointed, deeply upset and sorry. I gave it all I had. Thank you so much for your extraordinary support and all the love you showed me during tonight’s performance. I am eternally grateful. Love, Elton.’

The rest of the shows went ahead as planned.
