She’s earned critical acclaim and awards galore for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II.

But The Crown star Olivia Colman, 46, has some stark advice for her replacement Imelda Staunton, 64, as she prepares to take over the royal role for series five of the Netflix drama.

The actress admitted she ‘wouldn’t know what to say’ to the screen star who will play the monarch, but would warn her that ‘the wig’s itchy.’

Olivia told JustJared: ‘If she calls me, I’ll be so excited. Then what would you say to Imelda Staunton? Good luck… the wig’s itchy.’

The Oscar winner added that Imelda – known for her role as Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter film series – ‘already has a much better walk that her.’

Meanwhile Olivia’s co-star Helena Bonham Carter – who will hand over the role of Princess Margaret to Lesley Manville – said she’d love to pass one of her character’s most iconic items onto her.

She said: ‘It’s like handing a baton. It’s like a relay race, but it never comes back. I want to hand her my cigarette holder and say, ”Good luck with this”.’

Both Imelda and Lesley will take over the royal roles for the final two series of The Crown, which will cover the Royal Family’s history throughout the 1990s and into 2003. 

It comes after the long-awaited trailer for series four was released on Tuesday, offering fans another glimpse of Emma Corrin as a young Princess Diana.

The series is set to cover the couple’s fairy tale romance and wedding, along with the eventual crumbling of their marriage.

Charles (played by Josh O’Connor) also faces tension among his family as they pressure him to find a wife to secure the future of the monarchy.

Series five will then see Elizabeth Debicki take over as The People’s Princess until her tragic death in 1997.

Despite concerns that the series would be delayed due to the COVID-19 crisis, which brought much of the television industry to a halt, the fourth season will be released as planned. 

The Crown series four will be released on Sunday, November 15th on Netflix.
