The National Football League has revealed to the 32 franchises just how much they have spent on firings of coaches and front office execs, and it’s a big number as one might expect.
During owners meetings last week in Irving, Texas, officials from the league reportedly informed teams they had spent $800million on fired coaches across the last five years.
Per ESPN, figures were calculated to such a degree that league officials had individualized spreadsheets for each franchise, outlining their expenditure on dismissed employees.
Two head coaching firings have occurred this season as Carolina fired Matt Rhule in October, with Indianapolis dismissing Frank Reich just a month later.
Frank Reich was relieved of his duties as Colts head coach with four years left on his contract
Rhule had four years remaining on a seven-year, $60m deal. Reich also had four seasons left on his term from an August 2021 contract which amounted to a $9m annual salary.
More recently, Tennessee Titans general manager, Jon Robinson was relieved of his duties following the team’s resounding 35-10 loss in Philadelphia on December 4.
Robinson had four years left on his contract with the AFC South franchise.
While positivity may be percolating around the East Rutherford-based New York Giants building after a primetime win, its accountants may be a little stretched.

The G-Men are currently paying for three – yes three – different head coaches. Naturally, its current leader in Brian Daboll is receiving a wage, along with 2021 head coach and his predecessor, Pat Shurmur.
Judge was fired in January, two years into a five-year agreement. Much the same, Shurmur. was removed in 2020 with three years left on his half-decade contract.
While the NFL constructed and relayed said information to heighten an awareness of the ‘exact cost for instability’ there is sure to be more of the same this offseason.
