CBS is eyeing a fourth new TV show under the NCIS flagship banner, which could put the franchise in rare company.

The network is currently developing NCIS: Hawaii, created by NCIS: New Orleans showrunner Christopher Silber and executive producer Jan Nash, alongside Seal Team writer-producer Matt Bosack, according to Deadline.

If the show does get picked up to series, it will be just the second drama franchise to have four shows on the air at the same time, behind NBC’s Law & Order franchise.

NCIS: Hawaii is expected to feature a new team based in Hawaii without any crossover from the flagship NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles or NCIS: New Orleans.

Unlike all of those shows, NCIS: Hawaii is not expected to begin as a ‘planted’ spin-off from one of the other shows.

The original NCIS itself was a spin-off of the long-running JAG, which originally aired on NBC but was picked up by CBS where it ran for 10 seasons from 1995 to 2005.

NCIS: Los Angeles began as a backdoor pilot that aired as a regular episode of NCIS, and NCIS: New Orleans also got its start as a backdoor pilot on NCIS.

NCIS: Hawaii would likely use the ‘extensive production base’ CBS already had on Hawaii from Hawaii Five-0, which ended its 10-season run last April.

The network also has the Hawaii-based Magnum P.I. reboot which could lead to potential crossovers with this new NCIS series.

The NCIS: Los Angeles series previously had a crossover with Hawaii Five-0 in 2012, where Sam Hanna (LL Cool J)  and G. Callen (Chris O’Donnell) visited the island while working on a case.

The original NCIS has been a ratings juggernaut for CBS since debuting in 2002, currently in its 18th season, starring Mark Harmon.

The show has finished in the top 5 of the Nielsen ratings for the entire year for the past 12 seasons.
