Married At First Sight’s Elizabeth Sobinoff speaks about being sexually abused

She will return to Married At First Sight in the coming days, after her first appearance on the show last year ended in heartbreak.

And as she prepares for her second chance at love, Elizabeth Sobinoff has bravely spoken about some of the darkest moments in her life.

The jewellery store manager, 28, told the Beyond Beautiful YouTube channel that she was sexually abused by another child when she was six years old.

Years later, she began self-harming to cope with the trauma. 

Around this time, doctors misdiagnosed her with depression and then bipolar disorder, which resulted in her being prescribed the wrong medication.

‘I was on lithium, I was on everything,’ she said.

‘I reacted badly to all the medications… I ended up hallucinating… I had a drug-induced schizophrenia for close to six years.’

Elizabeth attempted suicide twice before deciding to take herself off the medication, which she believed was causing her physical and mental pain. 

She was later told by doctors that her health problems had nothing to do with her mind, and was eventually diagnosed with porphyria (a disorder that causes skin blistering when exposed to the sun) and lupus, a chronic autoimmune condition.

Lizzie spoke to WHO magazine on Thursday about her life now after the initial misdiagnosis.

‘I could cry right now. I’ve come from [being on] a disability pension for 10 years. It’s only been two years since I’ve been out of that,’ she said.

In terms of her health, she said she ‘every day is different’ but she is in a ‘good place’.

‘My skin condition is basically the same but I’ve been able to give my body more of a break so I can feel more like myself,’ she explained.

Elizabeth is set to return to Channel Nine’s social experiment next week.

She is paired with ex-footy player Seb Guilhaus this year, after her first ‘marriage’ to Sam Ball ended in disaster during the 2019 season.
